Marijuana and Exercise

People think that if you smoke weed, it will make you lazy and unmotivated. This is probably one of the most common stone stereotypes, and yes, it’s true that some strains of cannabis have been known to make the user sleepy, lethargic and all-around unmotivated. But the idea that all weed makes you lazy and stupid is one myth that needs to be debunked. 

So, it really does depend on the quantity and the particular strain you are smoking. Nonetheless, cannabis users have a lower body mass index (BMI) than non-smokers on average. 

There could be many reasons for this, from a boosted metabolism or simply being more active than their non-smoking counterparts. 

As it turns out, cannabis can help you get fit. A recent survey of 720 people, found that 80% of them used cannabis before or after a workout. The hourly range is between 1-4 hours (before or after)

For researchers this was a shocking find. But should we be so surprised, that cannabis is being used as a work-out aid? Cannabis does help to increase enjoyment of exercising and it provides plenty of other medical benefits that is convenient for people working out. 

How does cannabis help with a work-out? 

For starters, cannabis can increase your endurance. It means you can jog for longer, lift longer and stay in it longer. Of course, taking a few dab hits before a workout probably won’t get you in the zone, however, most people who use it take it about 1-2 hours before their work-out. The euphoric effects should only be a shimmer, enough to quickly get you focused on your routine. 

Secondly, cannabis helps with inflammation. It helps relax the muscles and can speed up recovery significantly.  

The biggest problem with doing exercise is motivation. However, with cannabis it becomes a bit more fun. The psychological barrier is sometimes the reason why people don’t get up and do stuff. Many people who use cannabis in conjunction with exercise find that it makes the routine more pleasurable. It makes it easier to get up and get out of your comfort zone, to push your limits and to start a healthy habit. 

This doesn’t mean that smoking cannabis will cause you to do exercise. With or without cannabis, a work-out is exactly that – work. It will take effort and it will hurt. However, cannabis can make recovery a bit smoother, and you’ll be able to get back in the saddle much quicker. 

Nevertheless, you still need to make the decision to work-out. Remember weed amplifies experiences and feelings. In other words, a movie can be better if you see it whilst high, and the same goes for exercise. The same goes for lounging and gaming all day. The most important element to sticking to a work-out routine is motivation. 

How much weed is good for a work-out? 

The simple answer is don’t get too shitfaced. Instead, you want to get a slight buzz. Some people smoke a few hours before a work-out, others only take a few hits right before they start. 

Other won’t use any at all. It all comes down to your physiology. There is no magical remedy or recipe to the perfect cannabis work-out. Trial and error, will need to be deployed to find the best combination for you.
